Hoeryong Temple tells the legend of Yi Seong-gye (1335-1408), who founded the Joseon dynasty, and of the Buddhist master Muhak (1327-1405). It is thought that the temple was founded in the Shilla period or in the early Joseon period. The temple owns Hoeryong Temple Ocheong Seoktop (Hoeryong Temple Five-Story Stone Pagoda) and Hoeryong Temple Seokjo (Hoeryong Stone Structure), which are believed to have been built in the early Joseon period, and Hoeryong Temple Shinjungdo, an altar portrait of Buddha that reflects the characteristics of a 19th-century Buddhist painting.
